The Remote Gambling Association (RGA) has reassured online gamers that there are no major security issues with gambling on the internet.
Formed in August 2005, the association, is the result of a merger between the Association of Remote Gambling Operators and the Interactive Gaming, Gambling and Betting Association.
It claims that people new to online gambling can be wary of putting their details online and need to be aware that this is a safe form of gaming.
Brian Wright, business director at the RGA, said: "There are no security problems that people choosing to gamble online need to be concerned about.
"People still use betting shops and the telephone but in terms of having all the information ready and there for you, online is a growing market for betting.
Figures released by the Gambling Commission have revealed that 8.8 per cent of people surveyed in a poll said they had taken part in some form of gambling in the year leading up to March 2008.
