Ireland's capital has been named as the top poker-playing city in Europe for 2008. Dublin was handed the number one ranking by Bluff Europe magazine, displacing last year's winner London in the process. The publication said the city is a worthy winner because it is encouraging poker at the grassroots level. Indeed, it stated that pub poker leagues and societies are apparently "springing up everywhere".
Philip Conneller, editor of Bluff Europe, commented: "This year there was really only one candidate."
He went on to praise Dublin for its friendly and "close-knit" players, as they are more laidback than gamers in London.
In addition, he said the burgeoning poker scene in the city is "fantastic". Groups such as Dublin Poker nights are among the organisations which promote the card game across the region. The body runs games for professionals and amateur players, as well as fundraisers for various charities.
