The Gambling Commission has welcomed the arrival of Baroness Neuberger to the organisation.
In a statement, the chairman of the commission Brian Pomeroy claimed that the arrival of the health expert will be good for the regulatory group.
Previous experience in the public health field and medical research will prove "invaluable", he said.
Baroness Neuberger's role will be to chair the new independent strategy board, which will advise the Gambling Commission and later the Department for Culture, Media and Sport on responsible gambling strategy.
"I look forward to this challenging role and hope to be able to help to bring some coherence to national research, education and treatment programmes related to gambling," the baroness explained.
Last year, the Gambling Commission made changes to the Gambling Act, which permitted bingo and casino companies to advertise services and products across different media platforms.
Many firms, including Ladbrokes and William Hill, have created marketing campaigns off the back of this decision.
